William Steward Halsted (1852 - 1922) was an American surgeon and clinical educator who conducted extensive research in various fields of surgery. He emphasized the need for careful and precise surgical operations, and designed new techniques for the treatment of breast cancer, inguinal hernia, thyroidectomy, aneurysm anastomosis, vascular anastomosis, and other conditions, promoting the innovation of surgical treatments. Halsted also made great contributions to the development of early anesthesia, using cocaine as a local anesthetic and developing the principles and methods of nerve blocking anesthesia. During his research on anesthesia methods, he conducted drug experiments on himself, leading to drug addictions and toxic reactions that required hospitalization for treatment. He was an early adopter of surgical sterilization techniques, and in 1890, he first advocated for surgeons to wear rubber gloves during operations. He emphasized the integration of clinical techniques with physiological and pathological experimental research, placing importance on continuing education for surgeons. He stressed the fundamental clinical training for surgical residents and drew inspiration from Germany's experience in establishing a system for surgical residency. He personally provided surgical demonstrations and training to doctors from around the world, nurturing a group of talented surgeons and promoting the standardization and systematization of surgical clinical education. This sculpture was donated by the Xinhua Group of Hong Kong.
