"The Gross Clinic" is an oil canvas painting created by Thomas Eakins in 1875. It is currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the United States. The focal point of the scene is Dr. Samuel D. Gross, a 70-year-old American trauma surgeon wearing a black coat. He is operating on the leg of a young patient, while a group of students from Jefferson Medical College observe and learn. Dr. Gross holds a surgical knife in his bloodstained hand. The painting also includes the artist, Eakins, sitting at the far left from the viewer's perspective, above the railing on the left side of the passage. He is wearing a shirt with white cuffs and appears to be either drawing a sketch or writing something. The painting presents us with a glimpse of a 19th-century operating room. Here, Gross performed a conservative surgery on this type of condition for the first time, instead of resorting to the traditional amputation procedure. This artwork can be regarded as a witness of the progress of medicine.
