Introduction

Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau (October 5, 1848 – November 15, 1915) was a tuberculosis expert and a pioneer in the field of public health. One of his famous quotes is: "To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always." This simple yet philosophical motto encapsulates Dr. Trudeau's profession, which demonstrates the mental anguish a doctor faces when confronted with a patient who seeks help but is limited by the boundaries of medicine. It encapsulates the complex emotions of a healer and embodies the transcendent rational humility and noble ideals of great doctors beyond worldly matters. This motto acknowledges the imperfect nature of medical science while also highlighting the true meaning of medical service and the humanistic care that doctors should provide. The three short sentences are seemingly full of helplessness, yet extraordinarily warm and soft. They offer a different perspective on medicine, revealing its true essence and expressing medicine's reverence for life and respect for humanity. This exquisite piece of Canton embroidery artwork was donated by Professor Jian Zhang from the Southern University of Science and Technology. It was meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, stitch by stitch, taking over two months to complete.
